Long term xanax question

I'm not sure if this is in right thread. I have been doing some reading online about xanax withdraw symptoms. I had been taking xanax .5mg for the past 5 years at 3xs a day. During this 5 years I started having sever depression and other symptoms. My dose was never increased it had been same for past 5 years. It seemed things were getting worse and worse. After reading about the effects of xanax I contacted my doctor to see if I would be able to come off the xanax. He said, I should be able with no sideeffects. So I stopped taking them. The first 48 hours was murder but I was determine to come off them. So far its been a month with no xanax and I don't want one either. Could the effects I had been feeling before coming off the xanax come from the xanax it self. That my body had built up a tolerance a long time ago and wasn't getting an increase in doseage, so I was suffering withdrawals for much of the 5 years?

Thank you for your response. I'm glad I got off them also. Things are much clearer and my head isn't so froggy. I have noticed alot of the symptoms have lessened or stopped.  I just hate to think of the ones like me, who are suffering more because of taking them.

Yes something like that. Xanax can cause depression and rebound panics attacks. It's good your dose has been stable and not high. Yes it sounds like you had rebound symtoms from xanax. They knew about this (upjohn), when they developed it and did a snow job on the DEA. I'm glad you got off it!
