Meds that dont' cause weight gain

by LosingMyMindInGA, Sep 19, 2007 10:58AM
I was on Lexapro for almost 2 years...it helped with the depression, etc but made me an emotional zombie...i had no feelings up or down.  It also caused me to gain about 40 lbs.  I recently, in the last two months, went off of it becuase I got pregnant...I have since had a m/c and I feel i need to go back on SOMETHING.  Are there any antidepressants that don't cause weight gain???  What good does an antidepressant do when it makes you feel better but then makes you gain weight which in turn makes you feel worse?

I went on Prozac last November and the one thing I was worried about was weight gain, but my psychiatrist told me that as opposed to most other SSRI's prozac typically does not cause weight gain. In fact, some people have even lost weight on it.....which is what happened to me. I am/was at a healthy weight and I did lose about 5 - 10 lbs. Remember that meds effect everyone differently though.

Hi there, I dont know which drugs dont cause weight gain, but i can tell you another one that does!!  Celexa!  I have been on it for a few years and my body is unrecognizable!  i am disgusted with what i look like!  i think i have gained about 40 lbs too.  but on the other end, i am feeling ok.  so what to do??  i would say dont consider celexa as a new anti-depressant for you!  good luck!!

It sucks because you are so right!.. If I am not on medicine I'm always depressed and crying and it sucks because I don't really understand having this depression too much, Because I have a WONDERFUL Husband which next month it will be 8 Years married, We have two beautiful boys, But when I was 15, My grandma invitied me on a week long cruise to Hawaii and the feelings in my head wern't excited they were like as if it was just another day and I wasn't excited or anything about going, I just don't seem to get those kinda feelings for some reason. Also I think I have an anger problem, Which is odd because I never did before I started taking the Effexor..So I'm wondering if Anger or something like this is one of the side effects also. I Live in Columbus, GA. But I am from San Diego, Ca.. I HATE THIS PLACE. No beach, Some of the people here are so judgemental. Anyways I also Excersise everyday at Golds Gym, And NO MATTER what I do I CANT LOSE A D*** lb! What is wrong with these medicines??

after gaining weight on depo provera, elavil and/or zoloft my doc prescribed lexapro (an antidepressent supposed to not cause weight gain) with phentermine (diet pills) which i found out could not be combined (something about the diet pills intensifying the effects of the SSRI) so weve switched now to cymbalta for anxiety/depression with phamacist stating that it was one of the only drugs used to treat depression that does not have any weight side effects. We'll see!
