Suicidal thoughts from extreme pain?

When I was in extreme amounts of pain, with constant dental work (weekly) and massive strain over all (this lasted years) I wasnt really suicidal. But when the pain got so very very VERY bad, id occasionally become "suicidal", but this would dissapear the instant the pain stopped.

This pain was extreme. Like, wow. Like I thought "Oh god what if it never stops what if i hurt like this for ever what will i do" and other collapses in rationality. There was never a plan or an attempt to carry it out, and it was only associated with those highest levels of pain, which did not last more than a few minutes at a time.

I am in no way suicidal at this point, nor have I been for a long time. Its just been bothering me to think about. Was it normal at the time, considering the extreme pain? Again, never tried it or even honestly considered it. It was more like a repeating "I want to die i cant handle this" in my head for the duration of the extreme pain.

I had my top teeth removed in September...the pain was unbearable for quite a few months...still bothers me. There were a few times when I too felt that I wish " I could just die" and get it over with...but I knew that was not an answer...I knew the pain would eventually go away...but while the pain was there, it was a different story.

I think the answer to your question is...yes. Yes it's normal to "think that way" when in extreme pain. Attempting it, or doing it would not be.

I think almost every person I  have ever talked to in my life has felt that way at some point when faced with extreme pain.
It's not that we really want to die, it's just the thought goes through our heads...as an escape from the pain.

If it's not "normal" then that means only about 1% of the population ( those that have never experienced pain before) are "normal"...just ask anyone who's ever had a migraine before. lol
