Wellbutrin XL

by Joe154, Oct 26, 2007 09:11AM
I am feeling extremely racey from the Wellbutrin. I am on 150 mgs of XL. It definately helps with my motivation but I would like it toned down just a bit. If I took it every other day would that help????? I have been on it for a month. I am seeing my Dr. this Monday. What is your opinion?

Damn, I feel very racey on Wellbutrin xl...I was on 300 mg and I felt racey and anxious, so I cut back to 150, but still feel like I am on speed.
I have been on it about 5 weeks now...I hope it levels off.
How are you doing on it? Or did you get off?

Sometimes, not always if someone is actually Bipolar, these drugs can be very activating. By that, I mean, they can cause anxiety, hyper behavior, racing thoughts, inability to sit still. I tried this drug years back before I was diagnosed with BP and boy I was cranky and felt like I had 10 cups of coffee in my system.  I've also heard that extended release seems to have more issues, so going to the regular tabs and lower the dose may do the trick, just keep a journal of how you are feeling then take it to your doctor.

I was prescibed the Wellbutrin SR 150's a few years back and felt like I was on speed and had no appetite the first few weeks. I got used to it but after a few months I was prescibed Xanax on top of it because I've always had problems with anxiety and insomnia and the Wellbutrin seemed to aggravate those issues. It was great for the depression and I liked that it motivated me. (and the Xanax did help take the edge off, but I am by no means recommending that anyone get involved with benzos if they don't have too!) The Wellbutrin got bumped up to 2 a day and that gave me the speedy feeling again so I backed down to one. At one point the pharmacist screwed up and gave me the XL's and from what I remember I took those every other day. I only took the Wellbutrin for about 3 years and I tapered off a few months ago, mainly because I had a bad drinking problem and and Wellbutrin is pretty hard on your liver. I cut back to every other day, then one every 2 or 3 days and I did okay. But I was taking GABA (a supplement) at the time I cut back and I swear it seemed to make the withdrawal much more bearable. I basically just dealt with headaches for a couple of weeks. I would certainly talk to you doctor about trying the regular Wellbutrin SR and see if that makes the speedy feeling less intense. From my experience and what I've heard from others it gets better after a few weeks, but everyone is different. In the meantime, it ***** to feel like your skin is crawling and your hair is standing on end, so I sympathize. Good luck to you and have a great New Year!
