What is wrong with my Uncle

My uncle (71yo) has been admitted into hospital a week ago after he exhibited signs of some sort of depression. However, it only manifested itself practically within two days. He was a bit vague one day and said he was going to a party, then the next day he was curled up in bed not responding to anyone. He went hospital where he was in a normal state, talking, eating etc. Then the next day he went into a catatonic state of just sleeping and not responding to anything. However, when they try and change his sheets or bath him he gets very agressive (he is normally a very frail man.)
Sometime he wakes up and talks normally and eats then slips back into this deep sleep. He isnt on any medication. He has all the tests, including MRI. He had a stroke 15 years ago and he did have slight brain damage. The doctors are at a bit of a loss as its not an infection either. They dont believe its dementure or alzhiemers as it has come on so very quickly

Has anyone had any experience with this?

He didnt actually go to a party - he said he was going (he was rambling a bit and vague). He is a frail 71 yo man and never taken drugs in his life. The reason he went into hospital was that he wouldnt get out of bed and whihc his GP through was depression. But it came about so suddenly. No one can find anything!

Hello and welcome!

I wish I could at least give you some ideas, but it sounds pretty perplexing.  If his doctors haven't figured it out, I don't think we would have a clue.

The one thing I wanted to ask is...was there a tox screen done for drugs?  Considering the party he went to was right before this happened, I'd be suspicious of something like that.

You said he was pretty much normal when he went into the hospital...what symptoms did he exhibit that landed him in the hospital?

Please be sure to let us know if you find anything out, and I wish your uncle the bext, hope he gets better quickly!
