What should I do?

I need someone's advice on if I'm suffering from Depression... I would talk to my elders but they would say I'm making it up or I'm being silly.
For the past Three Weeks I've been Moody, Feeling no Emotions, Nothing excites me anymore, I've been so critical and down on my image and life-value.
I've looked at websites but I need a ACTUAL opinion from someone I don't know.
Am I suffering? If so, how can I fix it?

Hi, I feel for you and know what you are going through. It is very hard to live like we do. I am a 62 yr. old lady who has been suffering since I was 14. For yrs. I tried to talk it out with therapy, to read books on the subject and to apply their techniques on how to get over it. I prayed to God and read the bible begging for help before I snapped and took my life, I was so suicidal. Even God seemed like he was out for lunch with the rest of society. Around my 40's I started to realize it was a chemical imbalance and I knew that mental illness ran through my family. I started to take anti- depressants. Some worked for a short while others longer. It was  hard taking drugs because though they helped somewhat the side affects were many. At times they made me depressed as well. Now at 62 I look back at my life and realize I will never beat my depression but I can learn to cope with it by doing many things, like keeping busy and focusing on tools to cope with it. I like walking, writing poetry, going to movies, dancing, drawing, painting, working in my flower garden, eating healthy, not abusing drugs or alcohol and above all I have cats that are very therapeutic for me. They are always around when others are not. I also have a supportive family that have helped me to deal with my struggles. It is a combination of all these that have helped me and right now I am trying to wean myself off of any depression drugs to see if I can do it without. No one wants to talk about mental illness because you are automatically perceived as if you are a flaming, raging Crazy nut; when in fact most are super intelligent with many gifts to offer society and very creative. You would not believe how many very famous people today and from the past have gone through what we have, it's unbelievable! You are not the only one and this depression can come and go, so it too will pass. Please talk to your family to your Doctor and try some medications that might help you. You might have to go through a few before you find the right one. When you do, it can be a life saver. Try doing some of the things I suggested that are positive. Having an animal to pet and hold is a big one for me. Never feel alone, we are many out there facing the same thing. God Bless you and see your Doctor.

Hi violet,

There are free questionnaires online that are preliminary screenings for depression, anxiety etc. I recommend completing one of these honestly, and if they indicate depression or anxiety, consider bringing it to your elders to ask for help.

Fixing it would be done with either a psychiatrist or a therapist/counselor or both. Typically a combination of antidepressant medication and talk therapy is the most effective way to treat depression.

If your on meds you may want to change your meds.  If you don't choose meds (ssri's) to treat it then it would be wise to choose a healthy lifestyle.  Nutrition, exercise, distilled water, sunshine D vitamin, temperance, air, rest, and trust in God.  Have your vitamin D levels checked.  I have heard the levels should be between 30-100.  Mine was 11.  A doctor told me she keeps hers in the 70's.  I am on a prescribed supplement of vitamin D of 50,000 iu of ergocalciferol, because of my vegan diet and spending more time in the sun which has now raised my D levels to the 30's which they say is still low.  I refused the fatting ssri's they attempt to put you on, i have already been there and done that.  The ssri's also quit working and you have to bounce around to differant ones.  Herbal's are the best at this time of my life and i have opted for education from herbal encyclopedia's, plural.  Seek and search out many options and weigh it in the balances to make a healthy choice.      :)
