affects of depression meds on spouse

by annie13, Nov 30, 2007 08:48PM
My husband of nearly 30years was diagnosed with depression about 5 years ago. He is on depression medicine and recently has been put on wellbutrin 300mg to help the sexual side affects. But what really upsets me is the lack of genuine affection and attention he used to give me prior to the meds. Wellbutrin doesn't seem to be helping. For all our lives together he has always displayed head over heals love and wanting to be with me, just by doing little things like lying next to me on the couch. Now, he seems like my brother or roommate rather than the man who is in love with me. I tried to talk to him, but he doesn't see it. He feels much calmer on the meds and I can see a huge difference in his stress, but I do miss the man who was my husband. I don't know what to do, do you have any suggestions. We are still pretty young, I am 45 and he just turned 50. Thank You.

So he's turned into zombie man??? Is he on an SSRI? That medication can definitely bring on apathy and make a person seem zombie-like. Can he have his dose lowered? It sounds too high..Wellbutrin can counter some of that but it doesn't work for lots of people from my experience..seems to make people way to agitated. Try buspirone to counter the SSRI sexual side effects, it's much better. My husban is on buspirone and an SSRI, his sex drive came back with a vengeance..it alarmed even him..he had been on an SSRI for years before that and had sexual side effects with it. Buspirone takes about 5 weeks to start working ,but it's so much milder than Wellbutrin, ask the doctor about it.. and see if the SSRI dose can be lowered..
