Hypothyroidism can cause depression, but correcting the thyroid problem is the cure. It takes at least 90 days for thyroid medication to start showing improvements in the thyroid function. The nurse doesn't know what she's talking about. This is all being handled wrongly. First they should test your thyroid, then if needed prescribe medication, and don't expect improvement for at least 90 days. Once on this medication your liver needs to be checked yearly. I'm very surprised that they would automatically give you this drug when there are so many other proven ones for depression, and it sounds like depression wasn't even discussed? Educate yourself on your symptoms, hypothyroidism, and your medication so that you can ask the doctor all the pertinent questions so that you get answers. Don't allow them to blow you off just because it's a clinic!
Thyroxin is in experimental use for bipolar depression:

You could ask your psychiatrist if that's why they prescribed it.
i've never heard of a doctor prescribing something for thyroid before the tests were done.
Thank you for your comments, your CORRECT it does'nt sound right! I think this doctor is pretty full of it. I had a Acute Subdural Hemtoma in 2007 and it has been a real journey ever since, no insurance just treatement from the Mental health alliance after my release from the hospital. I guess they must think that it does not matter with someone like me . But that is thier businesss. I will continue to keep on trying to get help for my condition. He gave me the RX and told me to have my thriod tested, Wrote out the testing orders and told me to have the RX filled, I took the Levorhyroxine for 9 days before the test was done, when the results came back they were within normal limits and the RN at the lab said that i could consider the medicine working, After about four and half weeks my symptoms started coming back, when i called him to ask the Phyc to increase the med he simply said " I gave that to you for depression , i thought you knew that" I did not know what to say!!!! I have an appt with a clinic in Nov , to ask about this situation. When I started on the Thyriod med i started to feel so much better, my limbs started to feel better , my pain was almost gone now it just feels the same as before.
I have Hypothyroidism and am on Levorhyroxine as well as Celexa for depresssion and Buspirone for anxiety....from my own personal research, I've found that thyroid issues can lead to depression and anxiety, so they are linked health issues. However, being prescribed thyroid medication w/o having a thyroid problem doesn't sound right....
