mood stabilisers

Hi there

This is more a question for the ladies on this forum, Iam an older mum who recently lost  a pregnancy at 12 weeks. My diemma is I would like to try again BUT I am taking sodium valproate as a mood stabiliser which is like category D in pregnancy. Have any of you mums out there stopped the medication in order to try and get pregnant and how did you cope without taking your medication

I have depression and post traumatic Stress disorder and am currently on Mirtrazipine, Venoflaxine, Quitiepine and Zopiclone I have been treated for this since my mid twenties, last year I had three small focal seizures which no pathology found. I am now about to start on Sodium Valproate increasing dosage initially to 250mg in morning and 500mg at night this is being prescribed primarily as a mood stabiliser but is thought to help stop the seizures. I am uncertain about this drug and what effect it could have on my ability to work

You should talk to your Dr about it. I believe Valproate was just changed to a class D medication. There are plenty of safer meds you could take. Pregnancy is not good for mood swings. I can tell you that much. :)

Are you taking a folic acid supplement or prenatal vitamins? All women of childbearing age should take extra folate (folic acid) when on anti convulsants (such as valproate).

I'm so sorry about the loss of your baby.
