What's the dark, tough skin around my acne scab?

A few days ago, I accidentally popped a pimple.  I might have been too rough with the paper towel, because in addition to my acne wound, the skin around it (a good half inch out) turned red.  I thought it was just irritation and the redness would go away, but as the acne started scabbing, the red skin around it turned into a dark brown and the skin became tough to touch.  I've never had this happen before- is the toughness/darker color permanent?  Is there any way I can treat it?
