4yr old son - compound melanocytic nevus with cytologic atypia

My 4yr son (fair-skinned, white hair) had 2 moles removed on his temple a few weeks ago.  He had one of the moles for a year but my wife noticed the center change in color and we addressed it immediately.  During the removal, the surgeon asked to remove a 2nd mole next to it that "concerned her".  The first mole was 1.5cm, the 2nd was .6cm.

She took him back yesterday to get the stitches removed and the doctor looked at the results and said "not good" (although we later found out that she had not looked at them yet and was possibly reacting without bed-side manners in tow).  She told my wife that the pathology had been looked at here in Nashville and was being sent up to Boston to get an "expert" to confer with their findings.  The report said compound melanocytic nevus with cytologic atypia on both moles.  Neither were graded yet.

She told me this on my way home last night and I'm pretty sure I had a mini-anxiety attack!  After a sleepness night, I called the doctor today and spoke with the nurse who was very familar with the results.  She mentioned that it wasn't of great concern to the doctor but that the pathologists were just looking to confirm their findings.  My sister, who is a PA specializing in derm, told me that they were more than likely looking to "call it" correctly and that was the reason to send it to Boston.  Both the nurse and my sister told me that if it was melanoma then the pathologists here would have identified it as such and that it's most likely spitz nevus or something.

In any event, I'm a father who is worried about his son.  I've drained my entire emotional immune system in one day and am looking for some advice!

Dad, Welcome to Medhelp!! Take it easy, and have faith that the doctors are doing everything they can for your pride and joy. Of course you will worry, but it is probably just a benign lesion, and will not bring forth any negative results. Take care. Try not to worry!!!
