Hi. Diet has not been proven to affect acne. When we eat, nutrients are carried to organs like the brain and heart first so your skin may not improve from a healthy diet.
Acne is caused by a sensitivity to the effects of androgens (male hormones) in our bodies. These stimulate the sebaceous
glands to produce oil which causes spots. Acne is therefore "unfair"; people with healthy lifestyles can still get it. It is a disorder of the sebaceous glands, not a reflection of your diet and lifestyle.
You may need treatment for as long as you are prone to acne. Antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline may need to be taken long term, and most patients can do this without serious side effects.
Bert is right. Differin is a topical syntheitc retinoid which is really effective and generally well tolerated.
Have you discussed Accutane (oral Isotretinoin) with your doctor? This is considered the "gold star" treatment for acne. It is reserved for patients with severe acne which has not responded to other treatments, or who have relapsed after discontinuing therapy. It has many potential side effects but this must be balanced against the fact that 80% of patients experience long term remission from acne after one course lasting 16-24 weeks.
Eloise.
Treatment for acne may depend on how severe this is. For mild forms, topical medications may suffice. However, for severe nodular or cystic acne, then you may need oral antibiotics for this. As for natural ways to treat acne, I can not give a run down of any natural way that may be deemed effective. Several factors affect acne including genetic factors. Stress and certain food intake also contribute.
Avoid eating spicy food and try to use a milder and hypoallergenic cream or body wash. These will be able to help. Acne may sometimes have a dermatitic component. Thus, it is important to avoid abrasive cleansers or products on the body.
