Birthmark on penis

I have a small, dark colored, birthmark near the head of my penis that i've had for as long as I can remember. The birthmark is not raised, but is just a dark discoloration of the skin, as if the pigment cells are overactive in that one small area. Its always made me super self conscious, to the point where its destroyed my sex life along with my self esteem.

As of late, i've seriously considered getting this checked by a dermatologist and hopefully removed. My concern is that treating this birthmark with a laser will possibly cause damage to this highly sensitive part of the body. Another concern of mine is that once treated, it will return.

I also have a few small birthmarks on the head of my penis as well as on the shaft. It has also made me self conscious and some what ruined my sex life and self esteem in that area. I would really love to have these small birth marks removed, as they are in a very noticable and important area. However I also am concerned that i will either loose sensativity in my head and shaft of my penis, or perhaps even cause some type of disfunction all together. I booked an appointmen twith Lazerderm, but any advice would be appreciated. I would love to have it removed and move on with my life.

the birthmark is not very large, maybe the size of an eraser on a regular #2 pencil, or better yet, the head of a regular push pin. Just a small round birthmark, it isn't raised, nothing abnormal looking, slightly darker than the surrounding skin. It does not cover a large area at all, but its pretty obvious.

From my research, and subsequent self diagnosis, I believe this birthmark is simply a case of hyperpigmentation.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,

Birthmarks may be a plain hyperpigmentation as in the case of nevus or moles. They can be more complicated structures like vascular birthmarks, an example of which is a  hemangioma. They may be malformations of lymphatics and arteries.

I suggest , that you have this checked by your dermatologist. There are dermatologists with a good experience on birthmark removal. For some, this may require referral to a cosmetic surgeon. In you case, however the risk and benefits have to be weighed.

What is the size of the birthmark? Does it cover or affect a large area of your penis?

I can not really say if laser therapy is effective in treating genital birthmarks. Although at this point,  I feel that this does not require further intervention. Unless , this condition is really large or if the area changes in appearance (eg enlarges, becomes itchy or painful) then removal may be considered.

Nevertheless, I understand your concern. Ask your physician about this. Do keep us posted regarding his/her advice.
