Brown blotches and redness of the skin on legs

Hi

About a year ago i noticed a small brown patch of skin at the base of my big toe. About a month later I noticed some brown blotches on my ankles they progressively got bigger and bigger. The skin on my legs started to seem really dry. These brown blotches would seem to get a bit lighter over time then i'd get more. Recently I noticed that that my legs (half way up my calf) down to my ankle seem blotchy red. there is no inching or pain. I've recently gain a bit of weight other then that I seem to be in perfect health. I'm starting to get worried about it. Is this something I should see a doctor about. I don't have insurance so I only see a doctor unless I'm 100% sure I need to. Thanks

Hi,

I am thinking that this may be caused by a vascular insufficiency ( decreased blood flow especially in the veins) . It is just one of the differentials. Another will be a dermatitis or fungal infection. However, you have not noted any itchiness or redness in the area.

I suggest you seek consult with you primary physician for an initial assessment. These may just be hyperpigmentations but we have to determine the patency of your blood vessels A complete physical examination, palpation of peripheral pulses and visual examination of the blotches will help define the cause of the condition.

All of it is confined between half way up my calf and my ankle. the only thing i have on my foot is the original browning at the base of my toe which has faded but it is still there. I have this same thing on both my legs. There is no Varicosities or Thinning or Scaling. I haven't noticed any dull pain. My left leg seems to exibit these blothes more then the other

Hi,

Based on what you have posted, I am thinking of a  dermatitis and vascular reactions.

The location of the blotches are confined in the lower extremities only?
Also, do they only affect the area around the calf and the ankle?
Do you have any varicosities in the area?
Is there any thinning or scaling of the skin in the affected area?

Is there any dull pain or ache in the legs when you walk a certain distance?
The discoloration in the big toe, has this resolved or the blotches remained persistent?
