Combining Retinol and AHA's

Can products containing retinol be combined with products containing alpha hydroxy acids?  I am using Philosophy Save Me serum (retinol, vitamin C, peptides) under Skinceuticals Renew Overnight (which has AHA's) as my night time regimen.  There hasn't been any skin irritation or sensitivity.  I've been thinking about switching from Save Me to Skinceuticals retinol 0.5 night cream for use under the AHA night moisturizer.  Can these ingredients be used together this way?  If not, why?

From what I understand, AHAs negate the purpose of retinols when used in conjunction.  By using the two simultaneously somehow the acidity in the AHA counteracts and messes with the properties of the retinol (vitamin A in general is highly unstable).  So more or less you're wasting good product by using both at the same time.
