Could this be anal herpes?

About 12 weeks ago, I began having discomfort in my anal area.  I went to my GP who checked for hemmeroids, but couldn't see or feel any.  He said to try some over the counter medication like Preparation H.  I tried that and there was no change.  I then wend to a urgent care clinic that perscribed Anusol; again, there was no change.  Finally, I went to a STD clinic where I was examined.  The doctor was 90% sure is was a yeast infection, but some some similarities with herpes.  He mixed an antibiotic and anti-fungal cream together and asked that I use it for 2 weeks.  One week has passed and there has been no change.  I can't see any active irritation around my anus, but do feel discomfort.  Could this be herpes still after 12 weeks?  Also, I am not sure what kind of doctor to see.  My GP was not helpful.  Should I see a colorectal doctor, urologist, or an infectious disease doctor.  I really appreciate your guidance.

thank everyone so much, but what is the general feeling as to whether this could be a herpes outbreak?  I will probably get tested to determine for sure.  It is just that I have never heard of an outbreak lasting so long.  One last fact, I was treated for protatitis in the Fall with antibiotics for over three months.  About half way through the treatment, this same discomfort in my anal region developed and took several weeks to go away.  Sorry to keep adding information but it keeps coming back to me as to what might be relevant.

The burning at the back of your thighs may be due to a trapped nerve in the lower spine, phlebitis or cellulitis.  Glad that it has settled down now.

Don't know if you are male or female.  If male, it may be worth getting your prostate gland checked out to see if it enlarged and pressing on other organs.

Don't wipe too hard.  Get a tissue and wet it, or get some baby wipes.

Best wishes.

just one additional comment.......the type of discomfort is not really itching but more like an ache.  It does not get worse when I have a bowell movement, but does get worse when I wipe too aggressively.  Also, I did have some burning in the back of my thighs, but that seems to have subsided.

It sounds like you need a proctologist.  Where I live, there is one doctor that most people see for hemorrhoids and other anal issues.  There are other  things that can go wrong.  Many problems there can be helped with sitz baths.

Make sure you have a diet with enough roughage so that you do not become constipated.  Also drink plenty of water 2-3 litres per day is usually recommended, more if you are working out and sweating.

You will need to use the cream the doctor prescribed you for more than a week, but if it was working you would have started to feel some benefit.

Have you had your stools checked for any parasites or worms?
You do not explain what sort of irritation you have.  If it is an itching irritation, you may have thread worms.  You can get over the counter medications for this.
