Eyelash Loss

Eyelash Loss

Eyelash Loss, eyelashes
Not sure whether this is the right forum for this, but my 11 yr old son has lost the eyelashes from the middle sections of both his upper eyelids. The outer eyelashes and the eyelashes on his lower eyelids appear OK.
I am certain that he is not pulling them out, and he has no redness, discharge or crusting of his eyelids.
He is otherwise fit and healthy.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?
And any ideas about how to encourage the eyelashes to come back, would be greatly received!
Thank you!

Hi,

Eyelashes do fall as part of a normal process.Without an underlying infection and other disorders they normally grow back. In adults this may happen after a month or two.

A thorough examination by an ophthalmologist will be able to rule out any underlying eyelid infection that may be causing your son's problem.

I hope I can help more.

Hi,
In answer to your questions, my son does not think there is anything wrong with his eyes. He does not have blurred vision, pain or uncomfortable senstations. - no itching, redness or discharge. I am certain he doesn't pick at his eyelashes and he is not aware that he is doing so. His eyelids can look slightly puffier than normal on occasions.
He did see his general practitioner, who claimed never to have seen anything like it. She prescribed chloramphenicol ointment, which seemed to sort out the puffiness, but I am reluctant to let him use this indefinitely.
He is now washing his eyelids and face twice a day with baby shampoo and he has some stubble on his eyelids which is just coming through, but if the puffiness flares up (which it did do a couple of times before I tried the baby shampoo option) the stubble dissapears and we go back to square one!
Does this all suggest an infective cause, because our general practitioner just shrugs my questions off and seems reluctant to refer him to a specialist. She thinks his eyelashes will come back of their own accord and cannot guess when that will be.
If there is an infection and it remains untreated, will this ultimately damage the hair follicles enough that the loss will be permenant?

Hi,

Loss of eyelashes may be due to an underlying eye infection, eye trauma, secondary to hormonal problems like hypothyroidism.A consult with an ophthalmologist will be able to help.A complete ophthalmologic examination including examination of the the external structures of the eye is necessary. Your child's pediatrician may be able to guide you.

Ask your child if there is any thing wrong with his eyes. Any blurring of vision, pain, or uncomfortable sensation. Ask him if he constantly picks on his eyelashes when he is alone.

Do keep us posted.
