Facial pigment loss

Ok.. So I am beyond trying to get anwsers on this facial discoloration I have.. hopefully someone got shed some light on all of this.

About 1 year ago I noticed I had about a half dollar size of white spot only on one cheek. I have seen three different dermatologist that have all told me separate things.  Basically, the spot has grown and no starts a lower lobe of ear level and swoops down along with the chin line and turn near mouth to the top of ear to make a BIG oval shape.  There is a clearly defined border around the white spot.. which looks slight darker than my normal skin tone and .  The skin inside the oval is very course like.. there is no scaling or raised tissue inside the spot but the rest of my face this is unaffected face is very smooth and the different in consistancy is only noted by feeling not with visual reference.  I am just worried that this "rash" will keep spreading.  The darkening is only around boderes and there has been noted some redness inflammed ring (like a ring worm border but not circle..) about 1/2 inch around border but then border changes back to darker skin tones.

Any help on this would be great.  Ohm and I am seeing a new Derm soon in UofPenn.. can I ask them to biopsy? Is that something that is commonly done?

Thanks for all the help.

Jenna

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,

From the symptoms that you have described, I would like to rule out the possibility of vitiligo. It is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed. The exact cause is not known but a genetic or hereditary predisposition has been seen.

Diagnosis can be confirmed by external examination, blood tests to check skin cell count  for melanocytes and biopsy of the skin patches. Please get the diagnosis confirmed when you visit our dermatologist.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
