Ingrown hairs because of a scar

I fell playing hockey when I was younger and received a nice scar on my chin. I am now 26 and recently banged my chin and got a cut on or right by my old scar.  The cut scabbed over, but wasn't healing like I thought it should.  I soon realized that the new scab caused some ingrown hairs.  I know I shouldn't have messed around with it, but I did and ended up digging out some of the ingrown hairs.  But like I knew, the hairs grew back, and since it is right by my old scar, they can grow through. I want to leave it alone, but the ingrown hairs get infected and cause the scar to look bigger and swollen.  Any advice?
