After reading all of the posts on the Upper Arm Itching problem, I decided to take one reader's advice and try something with Camphor Oil in it.
I remembered I had some "Icy Cold/Hot" (sore muscle salve) in my medicine cabinet, and thought I would try that first, since a few post's had suggested using Ice.
OMG - it worked!
Within a few minutes, the itch that was driving me insane went away completely!
Later that day, I went to my health food store to find something with Camphor, as the "Icy Cold/Hot" salve did not list Camphor in the ingredients.
After looking on every shelf, and asking an employee to help, neither of us could find anything. On my way out I spotted good old "Tiger Balm", and found it had 11% Camphor Oil, and it's cheap! (I prefer the White, as the Red TB stains).
When my itch came back later on that evening, I tried it and it felt pretty good, but I think the Icy Cold/Hot might really be doing the trick.
The downside is that it is a very strong menthol smell, so you can't really use it in public. I happen to like the smell,
Please try it!
It honestly gave me instant relief after 8 years.
It may not be a cure, but it's a good start.
Thanks for all the great advice.
Hello,
Well, your symptoms are typically suggestive of brachioradial pruritis. Brachioradial pruritis is an intense itching sensation of the arm usually between the shoulder and elbow of either or both arms. The itch can be so intense that sufferers will scratch their own skin to a bleeding condition.
The main cause of BRP is not known but there is evidence to suggest that BRP may arise in the nervous system. BRP may be attributed to a neuropathy, such as chronic cervical radiculopathy.
No cure has been found. The only thing that seems to help most sufferers is the application of ice to the area until the itch is diminished. Other treatments include cooling lotions like those containing camphor or menthol, capsacain or local anesthetic creams, amitriptyline and gabapentin tablets and electrical cutaneous nerve field stimulation.
Pls discuss this possibility and these options of treatment with your dermatologist
Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.Warm regards.
