Lump on Head

I have a lump about the size of a marble on my scalp. It is kind of mobile and it is symmetrical. It has been there for several years, but it started out very small and was hidden by my hair so I never paid much attention to it. Over the last couple of years it has gotten a little bigger. It doesn't really hurt, but it can be tender at times and have pain shoot through it from time to time. Is this a pilar cyst or could it be something more serious like a brain tumor or cancer? Any advice would be appreciated. i am going to go to the doctor next week for it, but I'm really worried about it. Any advice would be appreciated.

From the symptoms, it looks like a pilar cyst. Pilar cysts manifest as smooth, mobile, asymptomatic swellings, often in the scalp. Overlying hair loss may be noted. The definitive treatment is surgical excision of the cyst. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist.
