Old tattoo itches long after healing, why?

I got a colored tattoo about a year and a half ago between my shoulder blades. It does not itch ever unless something scratches up against it. Sometimes I'll get a normal itch in the area. The thing is, when I scratch the area it sets off this insane reaction. My tattoo gets painfully itchy and the only relief I can get is to scratch it. That sets off a chain reaction. I've had success in curbing the itch with hydrocortisone cream.

I have a black tattoo on my lower back. I've not had a single problem with it ever. What gives with my colored one acting like that?

It's possible that you could have a mild allergy to the ink.  Here's a link from the American Academy of Dermatology that gives a little more information- https://www.aad.org/media/news-releases/dermatologist-warns-consumers-about-complications-linked-to-newer-tattoo-inks

It's probably a good idea to let your doctor know and see if they can give  you a prescription to help relieve the itching.
