Perioral Dermatitis

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with perioral dermamtitis. My doctor gave me Doxycycline Hyclate to take 100 mg twice a day for a month. i have been taking it for 4 days so far... and my chin (where the dermatitis is) seems to be extremely dry and it looks actually a little worse than before. Is this normal??

Hang in there... It gets better. I am on the same antibiotic twice a day and I use metrocream ( the cream, NOT THE GEL). I am on my 4th week and it's pretty much gone. It still gets red if I get overheated or flustered, but I hope that will go away. I may have some scarring. Good luck! I know how horrible it can be... My dermatologist said my case shod have been on a poster. Ugh.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Perioral dermatitis is a chronic papulopustular and eczematous facial dermatitis. Treatment consists of oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. A mild soap or soap substitute, such as Dove or Cetaphil should be used for washing. Scrubbing should be avoided.

If the symptoms are not controlled by topical antibiotics, then oral antibiotics may be needed. We usually prescribe doxycyline and hence you should not worry about this. Hope it helps. Take care and regards.
