Rash on my child's trunk

I have a 5 year old daughter who developed a spotty rash on her trunk about 2-3 weeks ago.  She has stated that they have not been very itchy, I have not seen her scratch herself at all regarding this.  We do not remember her having any fever, cold, or any illness prior to the rash developing.  Since it started to develop, the rash has become worse and it has started to move onto her neck.  She does not have any allergies that we know of but we did get a new kitten a couple of weeks ago, just after the rash had started.  We have taken her to the doctor but they all they did was to do a scrape to determine if it was bacterial in nature, which it apparently is not.

What could it possibly be?

The symptoms are suggestive of pityraisis versicolor. It is a common skin infection caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur. This skin disease commonly affects adolescents and young adults, especially in warm and humid climates. Treatment involves topical and oral antifungal medicines.

Most cases of fungal infections respond to over-the-counter products, which contain any of several basic ingredients: miconazole, tolnaftate, terbinafine,ketaconazole and clotrimazole.You can consult a pharmacist and get any cream or lotion containing these ingredients. Some of them are Lamisil, Monistat derm, Mycelex, and Nizoral.
If the symptoms persist then please consult a dermatologist.
