Reoccurring and disappearing rash on index finger

I have a rash that appears and disappears.  It is the same each time - raised red skin in the shape of a j along the side of my index finger closest to my thumb.  It goes the length of the middle digit and gets a darker red closest to the joint.  It doesn't hurt or itch but is uncomfortable because of some swelling at the site.  It goes away without treatment but reappears in the same spot.  It has been happening off and on for over a year.

Thanks for your help.  I'd be happy to add a picture but I'm not sure how to do that.
