Hi. No causal link between Accutane and depression has been established. However, a very small number (less than 1%) of users have reported depression during therapy or shortly afterwards.
If you and your doctor decide to discontinue treatment, there are lots of other products which can help.
Acne is caused when androgens stimulate the oil glands in our skin. Taking an anti-androgen contraceptive pill such as Diane35/Dianette can help by blocking the effects of androgens. It doesn't matter that you are too young to be sexually active, this pill is prescribed for acne even though it provides birth control.
Taking an antibiotic such as Oxytetracyline is also useful. If your doctor feels you warrant both a tetracycline antibiotic and the pill you will have to use a condom when you do become sexually active, as tetracyclines can stop the pill working properly.
If you would like to use a topical treatment, speak to your doctor about Retin-A or Differin. These are synthetic retinoids which treat acne and blackheads. Although they are retinoids, not enough is absorbed through the skin to cause the potential side effects of oral retinoids like Accutane.
It is not suprising that those of us with acne are more prone to depression. I have suffered with acne and associated depression, and have taken Accutane. Email me in the acne forum or send me a private message if you would like to talk.
Best wishes, Eloise
Hi,
Several studies have suggested a possible link between isotretinoin and clinical depression. However, no conclusive evidence has been produced.
It is most likely that the depression is not related to the roaccutane.
You shoud get a proper clinical examination done by your doctor and try to rule out other causes for your symptoms.
You could continue taking the medications till then.
Let us know if you need any other information.
Regards.
i ahve taken accutane years ago for cystic acne, and come to think of it, I was depressed after that. I went off the accutane. It is ver serious medication and can cause major problems with your body and hormones. Since you are 14, your body is going through major hormonal changes anyway so the medication might be magnifying that.
I have never used bio oil.
Ask your derm about Retin-A.
