leg pigmentation

hi ive noticed over the past few years ive had a skin pigmentation on my legs, it first started on my shin, but now its on different parts of my feet as well as my lower leg, and has increased over the past 6 years, they do not hurt or cause me discomfort of any kind.
my father has it as well albeit not as much as me, i plan on seeing a dermatologist in regards, i was thinking that it could be my socks as whenever i take them off my lower leg around the foot looks quite a bit smaller than around shin moving up to the knee so thinking maybe it has to do with my circulation.
does anyone know what this could be?? its on both legs
