redness /spots all over body

redness /spots all over body

My eight year old started with a small area of redness on skin than over time it spread all over his body. Benadryl was given in liquid and cream for his condition. Is there a virus that cause this after a temp. It has been going on for three days with some decrease in redness over time.

Need info to research problem. Thanks

Hi

Thanks for writing in.
Although difficult to say exactly without examination, it could be hives, which is an allergic condition that can cause itchy bumps on skin. It can occur anywhere on the body such as the trunk, arms, and legs.

Hives are usually allergic (food, cosmetics, medication and insect stings) but may also be due to infections and stress or some hereditary conditions. The common cold often causes hives in children. Many other infections can cause hives including throat, stomach and genital or urinary tract infections; fungal infections; mononucleosis; and hepatitis. Many a times no specific cause for them is ever found.

They usually go away on their own, but in a few cases when they last beyond 24 hours or become chronic, medicine might be needed. However, you should consult your doctor for the exact diagnosis and treatment. The itching of hives can usually be rapidly relieved with antihistamines like hydroxyzine or diphenhydramine.  Do write in if you need any other information.

Take care.
