unexplained pain

My question involves ingrown hair and pain associated with it. Most of my ingrown hair is on my thighs. I sometimes get some on my buttocks, back, neck, shoulders, chest and upper arms. However, no matter where they are when I scratch them off I get a needle pricking like sensation somerwhere else on my body. Last night I had two ingrown hairs I scratched off. They were both on my right thigh. The pain from the first one was felt on my back near my arm pit. the second on my chest. Is this normal and what is it? Until I get an answer my wife will continue to call me a freak of nature.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It sounds similar to what you are explaining but I have experienced this all my life and to my knowledge this pain or sensation is not localized to any specific part of my body. It happens in random places and never in a repeated spot.

Hi.

This may not be the correct explanation but the nearest condition I can compare to your case is what they would call in medicine as referred pain. "Referred pain is a very unpleasant sensation localized to an area separate from the site of the causative injury or other painful stimulation. Often, referred pain arises when a nerve is compressed or damaged at or near its origin."

Referred pain may explain why some patients who suffers from a heart attack feels pain on the jaw or pain over the left arm rather than experience the pain right on their chest. This has something to do with nerve innervation and distribution.

This may or may not be your case. Although this may bother you, this does not sound urgent and does not necessarily need immediate intervention.
