Diabetes Type 1

I have type 1 diabetes, and have had this challenging disease for 30 years.  I am believing that I may be having the first signs of some nerve damage and am wondering what doctors/specialists I sure see.  Right now I have a family practioner, and have had this same doctor for years....any suggestions on where to go next?  I have excellent insurance (not always the case) and want to take care of this before the situation gets worse?  Help.

Thank you for your advice....I am experiencing the numbness in my hands, and my left upper thigh.  Also both my thumbs are popping in and out of the joint and is very painful at the base, which someone told me that may be something pressing on the nerve etc....Again, thank you for your help.  I'm sure my doctor can refer me as well now that I have an idea of what this might be....

I would make sure I went to an endocrinologist.  Then they could help you with pinpointing your problem and refer you to a specialist if need be.  You don't specify if the nerve damage is in your eyes or feet and hands.  If it is in the eyes, retinopathy, then you need to see an ophthamologist, but as I stated the endocrinologist will help you.

I have been diabetic for 39 yrs. and have neuropathy. I go to my primary care physician.  However, you may want to go to a neurologist, internist or endocrinologist.  I would also do some research on the subject.

Take care,

Marie
