Alcohol & Metformin

I just got a prescription for Metformin HCL 500 mg 1 tablet a day.  Can you tell me if I can have an occasional drink if I am taking this medication, or does drinking any alcohol cause a problem?  Once in a while I like to have a vodka & tonic.  Thanks, Julie

Oh no! 6.4 is good control--the best I would say. So, no you cannot get acidosis by taking alcohol, but then this has to be in moderation. Regular or over drinking can be dangerous.

What does it mean I could get acidosis?  Am I in danger of getting acidosis without take Metformin?  My A1c is 6.4 without any medications.  Is this ok or can I get complications with my A1c being 6.4?  thamks

Hi!
You should ideally avoid alcohol completely if you are on metformin. This is because it can precipitate acidosis and increase your blood sugar levels. You can however ask your doctor about taking an occasional drink in moderation. You doctor may allow this depending on your blood sugar profiles and diabetes control. However, as I said, its best to avoid. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
