Brother in Army with Severe Hyperglycemia, Wants Out

My brother joined the Army 6-months ago, and finished basic, and Airborne School and was started Ranger Indoctrine Program where on the third day after a long march he blacked out. He was rushed to hospital, and kept blacking out and coming back too. His blood sugar had dropped to 38, and he was under watch and "supposedly" tests were ran saying he was hyperglycemia. He was medically dropped from RIP and is now just awaiting seeing what happens. He constantly needs to eat, and keep his blood sugar up otherwise he feels lightheaded, about to faint, etc. This condition was not pre-existing, and now since he will be unable to do any type of MOS he wants, he wishes to get medically discharged. Any type of help on steps to take for this condition would be extremely helpful. Anything or anyone or any type of thing I can do to help him I will try. Does anyone know any Doctors in Georgia?

I recently asked Army  ROTC about hypoglycemia  and was told that it was not waiverable. I was wanting to go in the army for Nursing. Does anyone know if is waiverable and not denied for Air force? There isn't  really a  point in trying to waive it if i am only going to be denied. Thanks.

hey there , ok so basically if i dont say anything about it .. pass the asvab .. and go to MEPS they will  check for the hypoglicemia there? and i can still get in... ? if so thats really good to hear.. its been on my mind because iv been really thinking about joining up but im going to get my A.S. Degree first, in the mean time im trying to find out just exactly what i need to know to get in

kevin, if you want to Join the Air force, they will give  you aphyscial, befeore you are put in active duty, dont mention the  hypoglyvemcia, if its pied up in the  exam, they cma give you med wver soemtimes  so you can emlist. allso if you pass the exam . enlist if  yuo want to keep a ck on yor blood sugar.As long as you havent been dionoses with it or tested for it. dont mention it. Its the Militarys Job to ckeck you oiu t first.

hello, i have a question thats been on my mind for some time .. can you join the air force with hypoglycemia ? I have never been tested for it but deff. have it its not extreme though.. any answer would be greatly appriciated.

At this present time is very hard to get out of the Military for any reason. They will offer to treat his hypoglycemia before they offer a discharge. As long as he eats small frequent meals he should be fine. In Iraq he will have MRE's to eat. So he should be fine.

First of all this is not as serious as you make it sound or he has made it sound to you.  He probably does not qualify for RIP but there are many other MOSs in the army that would be allowed with his condition.  So my guess is that they will not give him a medical discharge but require him to take another MOS.  Low blood sugar can be serious but as long as he has plenty of carbs with him it should pose no substantial threat.  He will need to see the Dr. about getting a Glucophage prescription and those around him and close to him will have to be trained to use it in an emergency.  Other than that just knowing when his sugar is going low and taking carbs right away is the only thing that he needs to be concerned about.  There are simple tests that can be run to see if you are Hypoclycemic so I am sure that if those tests were run it would show the Army (or any Dr.) exactly what was wrong.  So I would have no reason to doubt the Army ran those tests.  Sorry I am not in GA so I can't help you with that request but the Dr. that you should be looking for is an Endocrinologist.
