HELP NEEDED...extremely high liver function test results

My mother's AST (SGOT) on 02/25/2011 was 105 and on 03/03/2011 it was 120.  Her ALT on 02/25/2011 was 122 and on 03/03/2011 was 158.  I am very concerned about her health, but I do not know how this affects her and for how long her liver can withstand these extremely high levels.  Please advise!

Elevated ast & alt, could also point towards Hep C and/or Liver Cancer. Being a Hep C survivor, I strongly suggest you get a referral to a GI in infectious disease Dr. Primary care Dr. can order test for Hep A, B & C, Cancer Markers and ultra sounds on the liver, which will also cover the spleen and gall bladder. Don't wait to request these tests.

I have to ask why are you posting on the diabetes forum not liver disease? Elevated AST & ALT means her liver is inflamed. Things you can ask her Gastro are:
1. Has an ultrasound been ordered?
2. What about a Contrasted CT Scan and/or MRI to look for liver tumors?
3. A liver biopsy to see if cirrhosis is present?
4. Testing for Hepatitis C

The above will provide an insight as to why her liver's inflamed, that is if moderate to large amounts of alcohol is not part of her lifestyle.
