is it really type 2?

I had gestational diabetes with my second child in 2010 went on insulin. After having him my blood sugars returned to normal but was advised to follow up with my doctor never had the chance to then in February 2013 we were TTC did a lot of blood work and tests everything came back fine. Then my doctor decided to do a fasting test in March 2013 which did come back at pre diabetes levels. I ended up finding out i was pregnant with my 3rd child and ended up a month after withvery high blood sugar levels once again it was so hard to control i had ranges from 6.0-11.0 mmol . So my doctor sent ne to an endocrinologist who said that I had type 2. After giving birth to my baby in December 2013 my doctor tested me and did another fasting test which came back at 6.2 and my A1C was 6.3 she said this was again pre diabetes  so she sent me to do the OGTT which came back at 11.2mmol my doctor  said she was confused cause all my test came back fine and at pre diabetea levels but that one tes  was positive which one do i believe i have been eating healthy and switched my whole lifestyle of what i eat and exercise.

Thank you. I am going to look into this further. I have an appointment this week with another doctor to get a second opinion. I will let you know how it goes.

Hello,

it may not be type 2, it may be type 1.  It is fairly common for women who had gestational diabetes to go on to develop both types afterwards.

If it is type 1, lifestyle will  not prevent it (though of course it is very helpful to manage it).  If it is type 2, then lifestyle will help, but will not cure it and it does tend to progress over time.

Given your current situation, you should be tested for adult onset type 1 (sometimes referred to as LADA).  this means blood test for c-peptide along with fasting blood sugar, and antibody tests.

If it is adult onset type 1, then the appropriate treatment is insulin rather than oral meds.

let us know how you go.
