Anyone on symlin???

My son is 16 and was diagnosed w/ type1 3 1/2 yrs ago.  He is being followed by CHOC endocrine and they are wonderful.  His doc has just suggested Symlin which I will pick up tomorrow. He has been running high and he is taking so much insulin, lantus and humalog.  He has also gained weight this past year and we are hoping this new drug will help him.  Any thoughts? experience?

I was 16 when we found out i had diabetes now I am 36, I talked to my endocrinologist about symlin. He stated it would help w/weight loss.  I tried it for about 2 weeks and stoped then started back for about a week.  There is a side effect to taking it which is nassua. I had nassua real bad so to me it was not wirth it, but your child may be fine.  I would take the medicine and with in 5 minuts be sick.  I have a insulin pump and the doctor told me that when I injected the symlin make sure it was not near my infusion set.  The insulin and symlin don't mix well.  I hope you have better luck with it than I did.  Hope this helps.

Hello!  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  My daughter is not on symlin, but we do know several people who are.  They swear by it, saying it does a lot for better regulating blood sugars.  I don't remember them talking about weight loss, so I can't comment on that aspect.  Everything I hear about it is that symlin isn't for everyone, but if it's for you it works really well.
