Diabetes and pregnancy

Hi, I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 31 years. I got diabetes at age 1, I am currently pregnant with my second child and am having a horrible time with my morning sugar levels. I have a history of this problem throughout my childhood. When I was a child it was do to a symogie happening, my doctors keep currently increasing my Humilin N insulin (I take this at Midnight)and it is still occuring. I feel it is a nourisment issue and am confused on when I should eat more. I have tried eating a snack at Midnight. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am scared to death. I do get up at 4 am and my blood sugar level is normal, I go back to sleep and wake up at 8am and they are high usually in the 200's. Thanks

Have you talked to your doctor about trying Lantus instead of the N insulin? It might be worth trying. My daughter's blood-glucose levels became much more stable when she switched to Lantus.

It sounds like the pregnancy is intensifying the normal dawn effect. Please keep in touch with your doctor and discuss other options to improve the control.

Good luck, and try not to worry. You're staying on top of it.

I wondered if it might be helpful to try and check your blood sugar at 5 a.m. rather than 4 a.m. If it was still normal at 5 a.m., the next day you could try at 6 a.m., and so on. It might help you figure out the timing of the surge, and therefore how to compensate for it better. Just a thought.
