Toddler with signs of diabetes

I have a 3 year old.  Lately she has been showing signs of diabetes.  I took her to the doctor and she tested 180, but she had not ate in over 3 hours.  That was about 2 months ago.  She is still showing signs, frequent urination (and in a large amount), starved to death, cant get enough to drink, not gaining weight, and just really cranky and fussy.  I was at my grandma's house earlier today and she tested my child's blood.  It had been over 3 hours since she ate and her sugar was 213.  Is it normal for her sugar to be so high?

I am so glad that she is feeling better today.  Since her blood sugars have been inconsistent, you may want to take her to a Pediatric endocrinologist who might do a little more extensive testing. Different tests can tell you more about how her body is tolerating sugar and if there might be some problem.

I am also not sure what you are using to test her blood sugar.  Does someone in the family have diabetes? There may be a problem with the test strips that you are using.  There is also the possibility that she is producing more insulin on some days than others which sometimes happens when people first develop diabetes.  Again, I am not a doctor, but I would recommend additional testing just to be on the safe side.

I took her to to doctor this morning and she sugar tested in the normal limits.  Today she seems to feeling better.  Is it possible for her to be producing insuline one day and not the next?

The only thing i would advise is to seek a second opinion from another doctor. Especially since you seem so worried. In the mean time just continue to monitor her. Until she is diagnosed there isn't a whole lot you can do except to balance what foods she eats and her excercise. Good luck to you.

It is definitely not normal for your child to have a blood sugar of 213 3 hours after she eats.  You have described all the symptoms of diabetes and, although I am not a doctor, it sounds very likely that your child may have diabetes.  Please take her to the doctor or emergency room immediately.  A prolonged high blood sugar in a child that young could cause her to become quite ill very quickly. The sooner she is diagnosed and put on a treatment program, the sooner she will feel better and thrive again.

I know it is scary to think that your child may have diabetes, but please know that there is plenty of support around for you and your child.  Many of us have lived for many, many years with diabetes and are healthy, happy and productive people.   The key is know how to take care of diabetes and doing it.   Your local JDRF organization can be a big support to you.  Please don't wait to take your child to the doctor.  Let us know what the diagnosis is and we can help you get the support and information you need.  I will wait to hear from you.
