Trauma causing nerve damage? Yes. If one is diabetic and has an accident causing trauma, like blunt force, to the foot damaging nerves, is this considered diabetic neuropathy, or can it lead to diabetic neuropathy? A comprehensive foot exam to assess the skin, muscles, bones, circulation, and sensation of the feet is in order. People who cannot sense pressure from a pinprick may have lost protective sensation and are at risk for developing foot sores that may not heal properly.

There are other tests the doctor can run. However, the first step in treating DN is controlling your glucose level to bring them into normal range in order prevent further nerve damage.
