did you wash your hands before you tested? i heard that some people who have ate bananas got a high reading because they didnt wash there hands after handling them.
Seriously, that can cause dizziness, well that is a massive eye opener, thank you so much for replying. I have been feeling alot more poorly over the last month and i have to admit within this month i have increased my carbs but i have always been an OJ addict, either Orange juice and bananas, but from now i will have to limit them. I will make a careful note of the ranges you have given and adjust my diet to see if i feel any better and make an appointment to have a chat with my doc.. Bless Julie
You might want to request an A1C instead of an OGTT since it makes you ill. It is the standard for diagnosis currently anyway.
Normal non-diabetic fasting readings are under 100. 100-125 is considered pre-diabetic and 126 and over is considered diabetic. Two hours after meals we all try and stay under 140, whether this is accomplished by limited carbs, taking oral meds or insulin. Complications begin to accumulate with any significant amount of time spent over 140. Yes, 198 can definitely make you feel dizzy. You've mentioned orange juice a couple times; most of us can no longer tolerate orange juice and the only time some diabetics drink it is as a treatment for hypoglycemia! It is one of the worst things to jack up blood sugar!
Thanks for the advice, to be honest i took my glucose again an hour and half after eating a toasted ham samwich with orange juice and it was even higher at 11.0. (198) so i think it's time to visit the doc. My doc did want me to go have another GTT done recently but i was very reluctant to have the test done as the glucose drink they give you also has a high amount of caffine in which i am sensitive to, makes me feel very ill. So i need to ring and organize something with the hospital.
So tell me what is a normal fasting glucose reading? and also can a reading of 11.0 (198) make you feel dizzy?
Thanks again.
No, 9.9 (180) is not a normal reading, though generally we check our blood sugar two hours after eating not one hour. A banana and a glass of orange juice is very high carb and since you have imparied glucose tolerance I would suggest limiting your carbs more to try and maintain your levels as long as possible. You might want to check your fasting numbers as well to see if you have progressed to pre-diabetic readings or diabetic readings. Since you have been diagnosed for 2 years did your doctor give you a time to come back for more testing? I realize people can have impaired glucose tolerance for many years without progressing but it is worth testing, perhaps having an A1C done (an average blood sugar for a period of 2-3 months)
