Metformin and Alcohol

Hello.

I actually recieved a bit of good news today.  After being on Metformin for Type 2 (diagnosed 6 months ago) my docs is taking me off meds  Ive been on Met 1000mg a day.  Fasting BG is 86 (diagnosis was 293).  A1C is 4.8. (diagnosis was 9.4)  He's pleased.  I'm thrilled.  i hope to stay off meds for a long time.

I'm a 210lb male, and I was terrified of the interaction of Met with alcohol.  I was warned about the possiblity of lactic acidosis, even though I was told it was extremely rare, and would only come about by heavy drinking over time, or binging something like 12 beers in a night.  Nevertheless, the most drinks I had  was a 6 pack of guiness over a 12 hour period at a bachelor party.

I'm going to Vegas this Saturday, for a college roomate reunion of sorts.  I admittedly may get overserved  How long is Metformin in the systen after halting it, and how long is there still  a danger of lactic acidosis after drinking?  Obviously I'm not going to make this a habit, as I didn't drop 30 pounds and get off meds just to be an idiot, but I do want to be able to tie one on just once.

Congratulations! Your numbers are excellent! It's great that you get rid of metformin.
I've been taking metformin 500 mg once a day since I was diagnosed in early Jan 2010 with a1c of 7.5.
My fasting blood sugar now is 75 to 80 and before bed around 90 to 100 due to exercising everyday and taking the medication and strict diet. I will have blood work in April and hopefully my doctor will let me stay off the med for good.

Hi,

the metformin would be out of your system after a day or so. Enjoy your party.
