Thanks for the sites WaveRider. Very helpful on understanding how the home tests work. I had the fasting test this morning and am hoping for the best. I tested with the home kit right when i got home from the Dr. and it came up as an 86. Hopefully it's consistent with that.

Thanks to those who have responded. You've been a great help. I can't figure it out. I got one of those glucose readers where you ***** a finger and haven't eaten anything in the last 3 hours. It came up as a 97 which seems pretty normal. I had someone else try it out too to test its accuracy and theirs was a 90. I have a dr. appt. to get the fasting test, but this has put my mind at ease for the time being. I don't know if what I ate made it spike to 168 or being sick did, but it's definitely strange to me to see such a discrepancy in numbers.

This statement is questionable, at best. The word "only" has to be omitted as a bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats will have negative affects on your glucose level test results. Frosted means covered in melted sugar, that white glaze stuff. Fact: There are 11.9 grams of sugar per 24 biscuits of FMW, about ¼-⅓ bowl. Double this for a bowl and you get 23.8 grams of sugar. Add a glass of milk - where every 8oz's equals 8 grams of sugar - your end result is a whopping total of 31.8 grams of sugar per bowl! Every 7 grams equals one heaping Tablespoon of refined sugar. So, in essence, you consumed approx. 4.54285 heaping Tablespoons of sugar. That, my friend, is a lot of sugar, especially 45 minutes b4 a glucose test.
What does fasting mean? Fasting means no eating or drinking of colored liquids 8- 10 hours b4 testing. Some labs accept tea but double check with your doctors office on the do's and don'ts.
Right now, I wouldn't worry about diabetes until you get your test results back. If abnormal then discuss with your doctor treatment options and methods as diabetes can be controlled and managed with ease. Until then, enjoy life.
Hi, yes eating before testing would increase the glucose levels in the body. Only carbohydrates (including grain products, fruits, juice, milk, yogurts, potatoes, corns--starchy foods) will raise the blood sugar level in the body. However, if you didn't fast (have not eaten for 8 hours or more), you must had a random glucose test done. they do have guidelines to tell what number is high. if your glucose level came up to be a bit above normal then you might be considered prediabetic. prediabetes means you you have a chance of being diabetic if you didn't change your eating habits, exercise and so on. If you start to incorporate healthy lifestyles, then you would have a chance of being normal again. hope this helps!
