why is my 10m son in pain??

my now 10m old son has been in pain since the day he was born. he has extreme gas pain--severe crying and thrashing about-until he passes his gas. this process sometimes takes an hour to several days. when it does come out it is loud--very forceful-and he screams even louder. after, he is fine. his bowel movements are always very hard-and we have found that adding prune juice to everything usually helps. however, at least once a week it will be hard, small and round. he usually doesn't have pain with bm but if its hard there is some discomfort. the gas pain seems to be worse at night-or more intense. he is in pain and it is loud and forceful 9 out of the 10 times he passes gas. i breastfeed the first 3 m, then bottle fed with carnation good start, then switched to prosobee which decreased the gas but he still would have it and pain at least twice a week. his diet is very limited because most everything gives him excessive gas--he can eat (baby food) apples, chicken, pears, peaches, oatmeal, nad prunes. he is normal wieght but humgry for real foods that i can't give him. i can't find much correlation in the gas and foods- or bm except to avoid anything that gives him gas and to stay on the prosobee.  we have tried mylocon, levsin, zantac, citrical, kondromel, and karo syrup. we have been working with a doc at duke and his nutrionist but no luck. the doc only saw him once and did no tests but tried different meds and diet. my son had a hernia repair (groin) but no improvement. he has a slit bulge on the r side of his b button but the surgeon said it will go away on its own.

call (870)269-4177  talk to Marijah McCain, Naturopathic Doctor, I'm a well trained DDS with an extensive understanding of gastroenterology and physiology, if that gives me credibility. Listen to what she tells you, your kid sounds like me from the stories my mother told me.
P.S. THIS is how God works!   Her website is:  http://www.herbalhealer.com/

lots of love,

I totally agree with concerned. I would also suggest a naturopathic physician that specializes in children but one that can provide care and support your whole family.
There are natural formulas you can prepare on your own (i.e goat milk formula), you would be surprised what a baby can actually eat.
When my son was very small I found out he was allergic to cow milk products. That does affect a lot of areas of your babies body (i.e baby zits on the face, problems with gas (collick), ear infections {big cause of ear infections and allergy like symtoms in children}, abdominal cramping, behavior and more I am sure), I had to stop drinking all milk products. (I breast fed till he was a year and a half and he weaned himself) It also is absolutely untrue what thay say about you can eat what ever you want and it will not affect, or be carried to, your breast milk.
After I stopped the zits went away, the gas went away and he was so much happier and was normally exsplosive as breast fed babies are.
Later my son had problems going to the bathroom (constipation, excessive gas)and I went to see my naturopath and she suggested that he needed more bulk. I stopped feeding him non organic, jarred, pureed, boiled to heck, overly convenient but not heathy for the baby, baby foods and started making him his food. It was her suggestion that after I steam (not boil) the vegetables (ie carrots, peas, yams)or homemade applesauce, mushed steamed apples with some boiled water (you might want to try this after he is a bit regulated as the pectin in the apples is stool forming ).
This was the best but the gross sounding suggestion yet, chew the food yourself, put it on the spoon and feed him with it (you might want to make sure you have brushed your teeth recently (rinse out the toothpaste well, and don't sweat it normal hygene is o.k.,), don't grind it mash it, puree it, but just make it mushy little bit, leave some bulk (not chunks just nice and crushed) and it is the absolutely perfect temperature (don't worry about your germs because your whole family have common flora.) Leave some bulk! This is so easy. This is what they do in Africa (no blenders in the tribe! If it grosses you out to much just mash with a fork especially when you are introducing his spoon). Same as for grownups that is what fibre is for. Stay away from starches and sugars and concentrated juice, possibly juice your own juices (great organic juice from the health food store just make sure that it is 3/4 water, toddlers and all children 1/2 water), use organic fruits, vegetables and grains as much as possible (these have an alarming amount of pesticide in them, grain being #1, and now that they are genetically modifying food what they don't tell you is the reason all the modifyed foods are disease resistant is because that are breeding the pesticide right into our fruits and vegetables).
I also agree that acidphilous/bifidus is a wonderful suggestion but I would ask the naturopath by what means to give it (most likely liquid and how much because it is something to start off slow and work your way up and that is info for babies and adults. (also found in active yogurt culture but once again cow milk yogurt I would stay away from). The naturopath can also insure that the product he/she suggests is all that it is said to be as not all health procucts are created equal and don't always put in the amount they say (not enough). Not to scare you but its the same with cars. Its the difference between a Ford or Mercedies.
Water, Water, Water. Water should be warm and available at all times, should be the main drink of the whole day (all drinks should be lukewarm/room temperature as the cold throws the bowels into shock and digestion slows right down causing back ups and very poor digestion) In the summer if you have popsicles or cool drinks make sure they are away from regular meal times so that his little tummy has a chance to warm up.
Finally this seems tricky but try to stay away from getting so worried that you keep trying everything. I'm not saying to stop but all the medication might not be good for his body. The side effects that these things can have is sometimes a lot worse than the condition itself "even antacid". There are a lot of "maybe this will help" and "take this just in case" options out there. There are a lot of natural things on this planet that are meant for ingesting that your naturopath can help "you decide"! You are the Mom and you know some stuff too. You are your baby's expert. And just remember that it won't be like this when he is twenty five and calling you to ask you what restaurant he should take his new girfriend to because steak is her favorite meal.
I hope this info and all the other info you will recieve will help you. I understand how desperate you feel. If anyone can identify with acute abdominal pain it is Mommy. Keep up the good work and remember that doctors are only human, and so are you.

I would get a SECOND (AND THIRD IF NEEDED) OPINION from an EXPERT DOC about the hernia! The bulge near his umbilicus (belly button) doesn't sound right at all, to me! Find out what's happening, regarding the hernia!

Also, try some BIFIDO-BACTERIA (related to ACIDOPHILUS) "PRO-BIOTICS"/BENEFICIAL EDIBLE BACTERIA. These are edible, beneficial bacteria that can help to normalize bowel movements!!!

Find some milk-free and gluten-free formula of the BIFIDO-BACTERIA (bifidus) from the refrigerated section of a health food store. Use an infant/child formulation, that is powdered.

Follow directions for his age, and weight, and mix the BIFIDUS with water. This could quickly normalize his bowel movements, if the problem was partly due to an imbalance of the large intestinal "flora"(bacteria)-- due to antibiotics, or other meds.

Also, avoid everything ARTIFICIAL. Read labels. And, check your water supply for contaminants, both micro-organisms, AND toxic chemicals!

I hope you get this figured out soon, and that your son gets better and feels better soon!

What were you told about why he has had these problems since birth? What is YOUR gut feeling about what caused the problems?

Sincerely, Concerned lady

Lor
try giving him pear juice, and maybe some more pears in his diet. Pears will help to soften his stool - and hopfully be a little more comfortable.
