Hello & welcome.....Do you happen to have a Veterinary Teaching School in your area? All surgeries at Teaching Universities are about half of what a specialist charges.....Although students perform the surgery, they are VERY well supervised!

Your suspicion is correct! Good Lord, I DO believe your being overcharged! $4700 is a ridiculous amount for a common stone surgery.....I don't care where you live.....You need to shop around!

For the other above posters: These stones can grow so large that the bladder or Kidneys can explode! Opting out is NOT an option for any reason!

How to Drink more water? Add 1/2 canned food to the diet...Fresh fruits and vegetables are moisture rich, also.....Add them to his/her bowls daily...IMO eating only dry food is what creates this problem...That would be like us having to eat only cereal every meal for life! We'd be severely dehydrated, too!  Nothing to keep the kidneys & bladder flushed & hydrated...

I have a houseful of Bichons & Poodles (Every age, mostly Seniors).....We've never had a stone here, ever.....We don't eat dry food either, though!       Sandy, Good luck to you & your Baby...I hope it all turns out for him/her........Karla

Our 10 year old Cocker Spaniel had the surgery today, here in the Cleveland (Ohio) area.  Total cost was just under $1600 for everything.

Our Bish Poo was just diagnosed with having a stone. We were quoted $800 if there was only 1 and if more than 1 stone it would be 1,200. The vet is in San Bernardino. Where did you go to have your dog's stone removed for the price you paid?

Thank you,
Nicole

My 9 year-old shih tzu was diagnosed with bladder stones.  Initially we thought he had a UTI but the next day he could not get any urine out and was obstructed.  Because I knew nothing about the issue, I authorized them to "push" the stones back into the bladder.  We tried Royal Canin to dissolve the stones but after 4 weeks they were back in the same place.  He is having surgery tomorrow, here in San Francisco.  The quote was $2,200.  I also had a heart workup done for him at another hospital, about $900.  When we're done, we'll be at about $4,000.  Hopefully the surgery resolves and we don't have this issue anymore.  I've had kidney stones and know how painful they are.  My dog is so happy and good natured...even through all of this.

My  8 YR OLD Lab/Rottie mix was diagnosed with bladder stones on July 13th. I of course opted for the surgery which was $1500 plus $85 for special food. I was able to bring her home and give three prescriptions. Rimadayl, Simplifex, and a anti inflammatory. She was groggy and peed almost normal for 2 days and acted only a lil off. On day three all hell broke loose. My son called me and said there was blood all over the house. I rushed home to find she was peeing with blood almost constantly. It was VERY red so looked very bad. I rushed her to the vet. He said we have never seen this post op, he gave her Vitamin K, another antibiotic and wanted to test her blood for all kinds of things. When i went up front the bill was $758.... I almost fainted the girl talked to the doctor and he removed some of the tests....one of which was to see if she had a disease for dobermans (this dog had no markings of a Dobie).  The bill became $160. After improvement over the weekend and Monday no further issues, she started throwing up. They told me to cut the pain meds if she did this so no more. She didn't want to eat for a few days but Thursday she acted fairly normal in the morning...peeing and happy. While I was 3 hrs away at work again my son said she was puking and not well. I couldn't believe this. I got home late and she seemed to be drinking eating a little. Over the weekend she stopped wanting meds. It was a battle for one to get in. I got them in but it was not easy. On Monday I called the vet to explain she had stopped eating and drinking and didn't look good. I was given a 4PM appointment....she didn't make the day. I sit here warning you BE AWARE OF POST OP ISSUES. This was a 8 yr old dog who was my best friend and my baby....KNOW THE COMPLICATIONS THAT MAY ARISE,  ASK EVERYTHING AND BE SURE YOU ASK HOW MUCH BEFORE BLINDLY AGREEING.

THIS IS EXCEPTIONALLY DRAINING PAINFUL AND I AM CRYING AS I TYPE.  BE AWARE THIS IS NOT AN EASY PEASY SURGERY AS I WAS LED TO BELIEVE.

I wish I had read all these posts before I brought my dog to the vet. My bi hon has been suffering from bladder stones since 2013,  we tried the food and antibiotics several times. She continued to get urine infections. She would bleed. The cost for the surgery was $2000. But my dog doesn't tolerate pain very well and I was avoiding the surgery. I didn't want to put her through that pain. I didn't know what I was thinking . I thought I had to make to tough decision to put her down vs surgery. I had a new young vet who actually agreed with that decision vs the surgery. He said there was no guarantees. I ended up euthanizing her and I feel like I killed her. He vet never gave me any direction , I was indecisive and didn't know what to do. I regret my decision and hope that no one has to go through what I have just gone through. The loss is more painful then you can imagine and the guilt and anger I feel will never bring back my beautiful bichon. I am heartbroken.

My 12 lb. 8 year old pomeranian just had this surgery today. Cost was 1249.89   07/07/2015 in southern Wisconsin.  Thank goodness for care credit and 24 months no interest payments.
He is quite groggy tonight but they removed over a dozen stones. They used staples to close the incision.

My 10 yr old Jack Russell was just diagnosed with two larger bladder stones, the largest is 1.5cm and he will need surgery to remove them.  Price estimate from a university teaching veterinarian clinic for surgery is $2,000-3000, not to mention the $469 it cost for diagnostics today.  I'll be researching other vets for the surgery.  Poor dog!

If needed, you can add a little water to moisten the kibble to increase water, but maybe they are already drinking enough?

Hello Rage812~~Are you sure??? Livers don't get full of crystals & cannot be removed.....Kidneys & bladders get crystals......One Kidney could be removed, but it's unheard of to remove for such a minor problem!!

Sounds to me that a culture was never run to specifically check which bacteria was causing the problem....Did this Vet ever run a specific culture on her urine??? This test would determine the correct antibiotic to use to treat a certain infection instead of any guessing....

If this really is the case, I believe you need to find a new Vet ASAP....

Please, come back & let us know more details...I'm curious, now...Thank you, Karla

My Shih Tzu has been battling a bladder infection for over 3 months with antibiotics that the vet here kept prescribing. Finally one day she went from peeing quite frequently to going a little about every 3 to 4 min, with blood in her Uren. They did the tests finally and her liver was full of crystals and needed to be removed right then. She's a 8 year old Shih Tzu 12.5 pounds. Cost was $835.00 This was on 2-25-2015 in Redding CA at above and beyond animal clinic. Hope everything goes well

My 8 yr. old 17 pound dachshund was diagnosed with bladder stones , Vet took urine and exrays, found struvite crystals many in her urine, we feed her gluten free Blue dog food mixed with string beans from a can we've been doing this since she was born...no problems till last week we saw blood stains on a pee pad we use when we will not be home.  We always keep fresh water in three rooms of our house.  Yesterdays apt w/meds cost 284.00. Surgery was advised even though she is peeing strong this will cost another 650.00, we are scheduling her for Monday morning..I have two dogs just hope the other dog does not get this it is a Malti poo.

My vet ignored my husband when asked about a payment plan..and skipped over my question when I told him what food she was getting ...He only advised giving her vitamin C didn't say how much, and getting her Teeth cleaned! My Husband wants to stick to this vet because he has been seeing Buffy since a pup..not often because this is the only real problem she has had.  But I think after the surgery we are going to search other veternarians. We live in Oldsmar, Florida.

I'm sorry, I just saw your post now, I was out of town.  The Vet I used is Yates Veterinary Clinic in Woodstock, Ontario.  My 13 year old shih Tzu had a second surgery last January for another stone that lodged in his urethra, so that surgery was a bit more and with everything was just over $500, that's xrays, surgery and meds for after.

I hope this got to you in time to have the surgery done there.  They are wonderful.  We just put our 12 year old goldendoodle to sleep there on January 3rd and they were sooo wonderful with us as it was horrible for us.  We miss him so much. Good luck.

your post is dated 2011 but I was wondering where you took your dog for the surgery.  My 3 year old female Shih Tzu has a huge stone and we are trying to dissolve it with the special medicated food, its been two weeks and it has not changed in size so we are holding off for another two weeks.  If nothing happens then surgery is the only option, we are looking at a $2,000.00 bill!
In your post you mentioned that it cost you just over $200.00, that is quit a difference.
Any information you can provide would be most helpful.

thank you

My 4 year old shih tzu just had bladder stones removed last 11/7/2014.  We paid $800 for the surgery including medicines and stone analysis.  Actual cost was $1,100 but we were given a discount for loyal customer.  The vet is in Anaheim.
