how can I get my dog to walk on a leash

My dog is about 2years old but I can't get her to walk on a leash.Shes a former street dog that I picked about 3months ago because she was so sweet so she's never been taught to walk on a leash at a very young age. Every time I try to put a leash on her because I want to take her for a walk shes becomes completely anxious. I tried putting the leash on her so she can walk around with it on her own so she can get used to the idea of it, but she just chewed it off.  I want to take her on hikes with me on sunday's because I think she will really enjoy it because she loves to run but I cant see that happening because the nature reserves in my country requires dogs to be on leashes at all time. Any suggestion would really be appreciated.

Hi Carl,  Patience is a key here especially with a previous street dog which may have a few lingering trust issues.  If she has a food drive that is what I would work with her with.  Put the leash on and start small, step away about a foot and call her with a little pressure on the leash while showing her the treat.  When she comes reward her with praise and the treat.  Repeat this and extend the distance a little further each time she does well.  Then graduate to standing at her side, hold the treat cupped in your hand just above her nose and start a slow walk with her, let her nibble the treat.  This will help take her mind off of the panic of the leash and on to food.   Just remember to go slow and lots of praise and you will be walking in no time.
