Thyroid dosage and problems

My 15 pound mixed Chi has been showing signs of hypo-thyroid, weight gain and increased agressive behavior. Is it absolutely necessary for her to see the vet to get the correct dosage for her?  I am retired and on a very limited budget, they get their shots, flea and heart worm meds, but another visit to the vet will absolutely break me!
Any ideas?

So sorry about your difficult situation but there is no way I would give thyroid medication without the dog being tested.  Giving medications randomly can be like playing with a loaded gun.
How old is your dog?  Any chance your Vet would let you make payments?
Other things to consider is what and how much are you feeding?
Has the dog always been aggressive?

Hypothyroidism is very rare and other conditions need to be ruled out first (like Cushings disease or hyperadrenocorticism). Aggression, although it is reported to occur, is not a typical clinical sign. I would suggest that if your dog is stable, save up the money or borrow money for a vet visit in the near future to correctly diagnose him. When you have the information, you can plan better about needed medications, if any.
