Beens and rice, what about spices?

As I have posted here in many different ways our Westie has sensitivities to many foods, allergies as far as skin problems - or that seems to be the case.

He is also rather picky about what he will eat.  I remind him of the time before his rescue when he was starving to death, but  he is not moved by such - seems he has the right attitude, don't dwell on mad memories.

One challenge is getting him to take medications (he ends up with some every them he goes to the vet), being a Terrier he is very stubborn and his past life may have given him a stronger than usual feeling of independence.

He does like beans and rice, especially the type with some spices my wife fixes on the range top.  I have used a spoon full of that with a 1/4 cup of small bits kibble and a splash of water to get him to eat the mix with his medication mixed in.

It seems to me that both beans and rice are considered good solid foods with few if any allergy problems.  Not so sure about spices, not "hot" but spicy.  I gave him some this morning but wonder ongoing if bean might be a good supplement to his regular (now fish and sweet potatoes) dry dog food.  It could also add moisture.   On the latter I note he drinks lots of water so I'm not worried about dehydration.

Thanks, I consider the kibble he eats as his mainline diet, but I like to add or sprinkle some bonus stuff on to give him some variety - he is selective, but beans and rice are both in his "like it" category.  I will give him table spoon full of these extra items in a treat context too.

He does have a sensitive stomach and will throw up - last time was when I added some vegetable broth (prepackaged in a box from supermarket).  The stuff does smell a bit spicy.

By the way...about beans. Do you mean green beans? Or other beans like pinto, black-eye, etc.
Green beans -fine. The other ones, dogs can eat them yes. They usually like them. I don't know whether they should be relied on as a main protein-source, even though dogs are pretty omnivorous, but a few here and there, fine.
My dog liked them, and lentils too.
But I overdid it once, and she vomited them back when I gave her them 2 meals in a row. I think she was showing me: it's OK for a small amount but not too much

I never gave my dog anything with spices, not even pepper, and she rarely got anything with even salt.
I might have been too strict...I don't know.

Sounds to me like you have him on a pretty good diet.  I would definitely only use just enough 'spices' to get him to eat it.  Some spices can cause problems down the road, especially with allergy-dogs.  Blessings - Blu
