My Dog Has Breathing Problems

My 10 year old dachsund has been having trouble with breathing.  When he gets anxious he starts snorting and a heavy breathing through his nose.  He doesn't seem to open his mouth at this time.  I try to comfort him and one day we had him at the vet when this happened and she said he was excited.  I think there is more to it then just excitement.  I was rubbing his tummy today and he started the fit so I know it wasn't because of excitement, he was very docile at the time.  I really am concerned about him.  The fits are happening more and I am afraid that one day he is going to suffocate when we are not home.  Please help us.

You'll have to take him back to the vet and make it clear that this problem is more than what she thought it was initially.  Also make it clear that it's getting worse.  Any good vet will take it seriously and consider causes other than anxiety.  Hope it all works out to be something simple.  :-)
