Pain in Dog's left hip area

Ok I took my dog to the vet last night and it turns out that the "lump" I felt was normal and nothing to worry about. When I got home I noticed my dog struggled to climb the stairs and started to let out a few cries. I looked him over and when I touched his back left hip area he cried again. During the night he would get up and cry a few more times and move around to get comfortable. I noticed he did this the previous night as well. He is a 5 year old Shepard mix. He weighs 57 lbs.  Of course I assume the worst (like I always do) and I think he has hip dysplasia. I feel so bad for him because he is in pain. He went all day yesterday and seemed fine it's just at night that it bothers him.  What can I do for him? My husband thinks we should wait a few days to see if it heals, he thinks (or is hoping) that he just pulled a muscle. These vet bills are killer but I don't want my boy to be in pain. Is there anything I can do to help him? What can I expect the cost to be for an x-ray or treatment for him?

I'm glad the lump was a normal thing. That's good news.

I'm not experienced with hip dysplasia, but I gather German Shepherds often get this. I hope someone else posts who has more experience, and can help you more.

It is typical of bone pain, and/or tendon pain to be worse at night. Don't ask me why, but it is. But of course if he HAS just pulled a muscle, it could be more uncomfortable after resting on his bed in the evening, for example, then getting up to climb the stairs.

I'm not saying it will help, as hip dysplasia needs professional attention, but in case there is arthritis going on, you could start him on Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplement. It does help with arthritis. Also Homoeopathic remedies often help with arthritis/rheumatism, and related problems.
