They've regained energy now, 2 are starting to eat some rice, the other one still won't and has diarrhea, but it seems to me that her body reacted slower to the meds compared to the other 2 pups, so I'm quite happy with that, just waiting for the vet to message me when to pick up my pup now :))
Thanks so much everyone!
sorry that sounded like a begging letter lol im just so tired and worried its nice to have someone to tell or ask advice from 12 of them all crying all night because my girl wont be quiet and let them sleep is making me pretty manic how long is longest i should leave them do u think its my 1st litter and not meant to happen hope u dont mind me picking ur brain
Hi Ghilly I was reading your post and am now really concerned with my 5 wk old pups its only been a day but morning 1 had diaroahea afternoon 2 now its 3 my girl (mum ) always has weak stomach and has since she had pups but this is awful to say i cant keep her away from their poo shes manic about it i have been awake for 3 days and nights now got litter of 12 were all so well they all seem so hungry today as well god this sounds bad my husband just left with money will 1 day more hurt? worried
Oh, didn't realize the pup was at the Vet. Like Ghilly said, that is probably the best place for the pup to get supportive care. I wouldn't worry about them not eating today as long as they are drinking. Their system might be off from the meds.
No she didn't message me the kind of bacteria either.
I have high hopes for her recovery.
Now, what I'm worried about is the three puppies that were dewormed yesterday because it's been 24 hours and they havent eaten anything. They just drink. They can walk, but they dont play with each other. The vomiting has subsided, I think. And that's about it. I might bring them back to the vet tomorrow if things don't improve.
Thank you
It's best that the vet kept her since the safest thing to do is to keep her on IV fluids for a couple of days until the inflammation in the stomach and intestines subsides.
Since she IS staying at the vet I think her chances for recovery are quite good. Damage to organs from the dehydration caused by constant vomiting is what normally ends up doing them in, so as long as this is controlled and fluids are administered to prevent dehydration, the inflammation usually subsides a couple of days into the treatment and things begin to improve.
Did the vet give you any kind of clue as to what type of bacteria is causing the enteritis?
Ghilly
She didn't really recommend anything since this pup is still confined in the vet, so far, they haven't updated me yet.
As for the environment, they constantly play with soil, dig dirt, chew on almost anything. So I try to keep most things where they can't be reached. My mom does not allow them inside the house, so they have to stay out. But we have this little hut that I always keep open so they can stay there, mostly they just stay in the terrace. They know where to poop or pee, so their sleeping area is free from it.
Just saw this. Hookworms are nasty parasites and probably contracted when nursing. They suck blood and can cause anemia. Did the Vet recommend a high protein diet and possible iron supplements? Some need transfusions and treatment every couple of weeks until they can be put on something like Interceptor. You also have to keep the environment, bedding, dog bowls, etc as clean as you can. Important for you to keep your hands washed as they can be transmitted. Hope the Vet is staying on top of this. Did he give anything for the gastritis?
Good luck. Hope the pup improves.
Just an update:
I took the 4 pups to the vet yesterday, 3 of them were dewormed while she was confined.
Stool exam says (+) for hookworms.
CBC = Bacterial gastroenteritis.
How much chance of surviving do you think she has?
Sad to read there's a turn for the worse.. but it is good you have them all checked, just in case. It also makes the trip, sound like that is difficult, more economical (per dog).
Keep us posted we worry too.
Well, the worst just happened.
The puppy didnt eat while everyone else seemed to have a BIG appetite.
I've already learned my lesson from a previous puppy that had died.
So I'm taking her and the other pups to another vet with the help of a friend.
I'm gonna get her checked Monday, which is a bit too long for me, because its closed til then,I don't really have a choice since its the closest one.
So far, I've seen a diarrhea like stool in my yard, which I think is hers, although I'm not ruling out the other pups. It's not that watery. Kind of like soft and mushy, (and shiny?) like jam. It doesn't have blood either, Im pretty sure. The color is very dark brown, almost black (Is this a sign of bloody stool? because it is in humans, as I've been told).
Also, we don't have those poisonous plants in the yard.
She's still playful, and drinks water, and eats like that of the other pups.
Thank you!
You should really get this puppy examined by your vet ASAP. It could be something minor, like a stomach upset, since the puppies are at the age where they are eating on their own but their digestive systems are not yet completely adept at processing their food. Digestive upsets are pretty common in newly weaned puppies but you need to watch and make sure the vomiting doesn't continue since a very young baby like that can dehydrate VERY quickly, which can become fatal if you don't get it under control.
Dogs, contrary to what we used to believe, are not obligate carnivores like cats are. Cats need only meat to live, while dogs need a variety of things, including plant matter, to be healthy. It's not uncommon at all for dogs to "graze" and eat grass when outside, but you want to make sure they don't eat something that they shouldn't, such as toxic plants that you may have growing in your yard. Do you ever catch the puppies eating actual plants or do they just eat grass and leaves that they find on the ground? If they play in your garden, you need to make sure they don't eat things they shouldn't. If you do a Google search of "plants that are toxic to dogs" you will be amazed at what can hurt them, things that wouldn't do a bit of harm at all to humans can kill our pets.
The paws in the water bowl thing is common. It makes a mess but really doesn't do anything more. I doubt that it has anything to do with her vomiting. It's smart to change it frequently, however, since muddy, dirty water is unappetizing at best. :)
I would most definitely take her to the vet to make sure there is nothing serious going on with her and then I would make sure there was nothing but supervised playtime when they are outside in your yard.
Please keep us updated on how the little one is doing!
Ghilly
Hope nature takes a quick course to all's well.
A 7 week old dog, even a tough Rottweiler, is pretty tender, it is good you watch over.
You may yet get some input from the many on this Community who are much more knowledgeable than I. But, I think you plan is a good one in any case.
Thank you.
Well, all of the pups are actually chewing on grass and leaves but doesn't seem to eat them. They just play with it and tear it to pieces.
I'm keeping an eye on this one though.
And I'll be heading to the vet right away if ever there's diarrhea or things worsen, but I hope it'll just pass, the vet's pretty far.
Sorry to read your puppy is having problems. From what you post it sounds like you may be a breeder.. do you have the mother dog too? In any case with several puppies you have a lot more experience than me on what is normal, but vomiting often is not a good.
The eating of grass may be an instinctive attempt to clear the stomach. I now it can cause vomiting.
Clear vomiting says to me the puppy isn't eating at all.. but it seems to be drinking water, that is important, but the water has to held down and ingested.
Talk with your mom, she must know what is best, and please let us know how it goes, we do worry along with you.
