Sick Chuhuhua

Hi,
My 6 yr old chihuhua has been sick since last night. I got home and found that she had vommitted and had diarrhea. She has not eaten anything today and is just laying in bed and will not get up. This is very unusual for her since she follows me wherever I go! I am worried about her and wondering if she needs a vet or if I should give it another day. Thank you

She is doing better today after two trips to the vet. They gave her some fluids for dehydration and some pepcid for the nausea. Her exam was normal and her bloodwork and all other tests came back normal. I have her on a special diet for the next few weeks. Hopefully she won't need another trip to the vet!

Thank you for the comments. She was doing better for a day. She was eating, drinking and acting normal. Then last night she vommitted and had more diarrhea. I will def call my vet if she is still sick tomorrow. I am just so worried about her. I will let you know how I make out. Thanks again!

Hi! Pls see a vet asap. When dogs puke, have diarrhea & lethargy, it's a very serious matter. Pls go before she starts losing weight which becomes more serious. Ya, dehydration has to be on IV fluid. Try to syringe her some fluid frequently to prevent dehydration.

After e vet, maybe give her some overcooked white or brown rice+steam mince chicken breast & sweet potatoes or bumpkins to start with. Ask e vet whether she nees any vitamin B12 jab/s to help give her energy & increase appetite. it can strength her guts too in future w a certain amt of e jabs. Also ask from vet for some additional OM-X probiotic, C-Lium fiber & anti-vomit pills to try to stop those symptoms. Check for any underlying cause w a blood test too. gd luck. ;)

I would definitely call the vet since she seems listless and doesn't want to act normally.  Lots of times dogs can vomit and have diarrhea and still act like they feel just fine, and those are the instances where I would say that it's OK to give it another day to see if the digestive issues resolve themselves.  When there is listlessness and a very obvious air of not-feeling-well, a trip to the vet is DEFINITELY in order.  Please post back and let us know what the vet said.

Is she drinking?  With vomiting and diarrhea, you worry about dehydration.  The last dog I had had similar symptoms at one point and turned out to have pancreatitis.  She was a small dog and had gotten ahold of some pizza.  The main issue was that she became listless and dehydrated.  She needed IV liquids and actually this was her only animal hospital stay over night that she had as an adult dog. She recovered fully and we were then extra vigilent about table scraps and garbage.

I'd go ahead and call your vet to be safe.  good luck
